Beer Basics

Beer is arguably one of the most popular spirits in the world. With Beer day coming up, if you are not a beer enthusiast, you might be wondering on where and how to start off. We have some basic breakdowns about beer that you might find informative while learning and choosing your beers.

First, you need to know that there are over 100 different kinds of beer worldwide. However, most beers are categorized into either ales or lagers. The difference? Ales have yeast fermenting at the top of the beer while Lagers are beers that have yeast fermenting at the bottom. The yeasts in the ales ferment faster and are done in warm and damp temperatures. Additionally, ales tend to have a malty and bitter taste.
When it comes to Lagers, they ferment in colder temperatures than ales. The maturation for lager beers are also usually done in a cold storage. Lagers also have a longer maturation time than ales.

Post this major classification, beers can be classified based on their flavor, their composition, their fermentation style, the ingredients used, the region and countries and countries they are made in and many other ways.
Most common way you as a beginner can classify beer while having them is by learning how much alcohol content they possess. Based on your taste preferences and how much you are willing to drink on that day, you can choose your beer. If you are visiting a brewery and trying to choose a beer from there, they might have their own unique ways of brewing beer and you might also be given the breakdown of the basic ingredients used and the brewing technique used. This might help you out in choosing what exactly you want.

You would already see that there are several options available for bottled beer too. If you are wondering if it makes any difference when it is bottled beer versus when it is served in a glass (craft beer), you would be surprised to know that there will be a distinct difference when it comes to the taste of the beer. Of course, there is a variety of choices when it comes to bottled beer too, and you can choose them according to your preferences.
